Will insurance cover the cost of my new roof?

In many instances, the answer yes.

An important factor is: has your roof been damaged. Damage can certainly come from a hailstorm or from a tree or a structure falling on your roof. The particulars of you policy will determine if the cost of a new roof is covered. Most roofers can help you by looking over your policy.

If hailstones hit with enough force the shingles can become damaged. To the untrained eye, hail, or other damage, may not appear serious. However, the dings, dents and divots caused by these forces can lead to erosion of the shingle and rain can enter your home down the road.

It is a good idea to have your roof inspected by a trained and insured person from a roofing company, if you think that your roof has been damaged. Consider having the roof inspection done prior to contacting your insurance company so that you will have knowledge of the scope of the damage. Having the necessary information allows you to talk intelligently with the insurance claims representative. Most reputable roofing contractors are happy to do a free hail damage inspection and advocate for you with your insurance company as well. Remember: knowledge is power.
